This position is responsible for field and office support to the Mexican wolf recovery project. Primary field work will be directed at reducing and mitigating wolf issues. Will also assist with office administrative details, such as data entry. May provide technical expertise in a specialty area, and performs related work as required.
Major responsibilities include:
- Conducts field surveys, monitoring, and management of the Mexican wolf to reduce conflict and impacts of the Mexican wolf on program stakeholders.
- Field work can be performed in extreme environmental conditions.
- Enter and record data into the project database.
- Maintains field equipment.
- Assist wolf program staff and project administrators with implementation of public interaction activities.
- May provide field support for activities including wildlife capturing and handling, population counts, and collecting and recording wildlife and/or habitat data.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The candidate will have knowledge of/in: radio telemetry equipment and techniques; general knowledge of wildlife management techniques, basic wolf life histories; computers; proper operation and maintenance of field equipment (e.g., four-wheel drive vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, and snowmobiles). The candidate will have skills in keeping accurate and detailed field notes; performing basic administrative support functions; monitoring deadlines; responding to the public in an appropriate and timely manner; navigating backcountry/remote areas using map/compass and GPS technology; safe firearm handling; handling of dead/road killed animals. The candidate will have the ability to work both alone and as part of a team effectively; work outdoors in primitive field conditions, hike, backpack and/or camp overnight or for extended periods; work after dark and/or in challenging field conditions including heat, cold, wind, rain, lightning and snow; work irregular schedule including weekends; and make decisions.

If this position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, then the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required
training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked or suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
